They announced that it's phase 5, and I know that Phase 6 means "full scale pandemic," but what does that mean SPECIFICALLY?
Would we have to masks like they do in Mexico City?
Would school be canceled?
Would they tell us not to go out?

The World Health Organization (WHO) provides an influenza pandemic alert system, with a scale ranging from Phase 1 (a low risk of a flu pandemic) to Phase 6 (a full-blown pandemic):
*Phase 1: A virus in animals has caused no known infections in humans.
*Phase 2: An animal flu virus has caused infection in humans.
*Phase 3: Sporadic cases or small clusters of disease occur in humans. Human-to-human transmission, if any, is insufficient to cause community-level outbreaks.
*Phase 4: The risk for a pandemic is greatly increased but not certain.
*Phase 5: Spread of disease between humans is occurring in more than one country of one WHO region.
*Phase 6: Community-level outbreaks are in at least one additional country in a different WHO region from phase 5. A global pandemic is under way.
(IT DOES NOT GO HIGHER THAN LEVEL 6)
There would be travelling bans, no school in most areas, people would be wearing masks and gloves, hand sanitizers and soap prices would sky rocket, most people would not attend large public gatherings such as church or meetings (unless you were dedicated and not scared of catching the flu) and people wouldn't be going for their casual sunday walks.

If there is a pandemic, it could be very mild or very severe, no one knows. Although since we are getting into warmer temps and deaths have stabilized in Mexico, if we get to phase 6 they are saying that based on this info so far it may just be a mild pandemic for now . Unfortunately, we have to worry about this fall/winter season b/c that could be a very dangerous time when temps begin to get colder and the flu starts up again. As for face masks, yes we would probably have to wear them esp if your city/county has probable cases. School would be canceled or should be if there are probable cases in the area. Let's hope they are able to produce, and manufacture enough SAFE vaccine for the fall. It has to happen in my opinion and I'm am not sure they can do it.

Interpandemic period
Phase 1 : No new influenza virus subtypes have been detected in humans. An influenza virus subtype that has caused human infection may be present in animals. If present in animals, the risk of human infection or disease is considered to be low.
Phase 2: No new influenza virus subtypes have been detected in humans. However, a circulating animal influenza virus subtype poses a substantial risk of human disease.
Pandemic alert period
Phase 3: Human infection(s) with a new subtype but no human-to-human spread, or at most rare instances of spread to a close contact.
Phase 4: Small cluster(s) with limited human-to-human transmission but spread is highly localized, suggesting that the virus is not well adapted to humans.
Phase 5: Larger cluster(s) but human-to-human spread still localized, suggesting that the virus is becoming increasingly better adapted to humans but may not yet be fully transmissible (substantial pandemic risk).
Pandemic period
Phase 6: Pandemic: increased and sustained transmission in general population.

Phase 5 is that the pandemic in very possible, like a mild pandemic, Phase 6 is a full scale pandemic, and we should wear masks in Phase 6, Phase 8 and 9 are good, it means that the pandemic is getting exterminated.
We would be couch potatoes, full scale quarantines, possible economic depression, we would be screwed, the sun will hurt our eyes when it is all over and we go outside.
Pray that there's no pandemic!!!
Phase 1:Begining
Phase 2:Spreading more
Phase 3:Countries take extreme measures
Phase 4:Spreading to many regions, more extreme measures
Phase 5:Mild pandemic or imminent chance of pandemic
Phase 6:PANDEMIC, FULL SCALE STAY IN YOUR HOME!!
Phase 7:Peak period is over, less people are dying
Phase 8:Dramatic decrease in deaths, be happy if you are alive!
IT DOES GO HIGHER THAT 6!!!

Phase 5 means that Phase 6 is imminent. Its not good at all and I am planning ahead. My family and I will be ready for a trip away from everyone. A cabin in the woods fully stocked with everything we could need for weeks.

Yes.
And we'd be fuc*ed truthfully.
6 is the worse. Pretty much don't go anywhere public.
We'd be couch potatoes wearing masks and using hand sanitizer every five minutes. =P
Not kidding, actually.

You may be right said...

Lets hope it stops right now and doesn't get worse. If only these people that went to Mexico would stay home and not go out for a week or two, then it wouldn't spread.

All YES!!!

Mainly it would mean all borders have to be shut down or closed to sustained transmission.
