CBS " 60 MINUTES" documentary on the swine flu epidemics of 1976 in the U.S. It
went on air only once and was never shown again.

British food critic Toby Young once remarked of one of the dishes produced by a
Top Chef contestant that it was a "weapon of mass destruction." The
contestant swallowed a bit hard on that critique, but when it comes to the real,
workaday world, invisible little critters can indeed become "weapons of mass
destruction" before [...]
okay so ive heard about the swine flu in mexico b4, but today at school we got
notices and like warnings about the "pandemic" saying that we have to be careful
because its in the bay area in south CA where our community lives. so, im

Im really scared of Swine flu?
I haven't been to Mexico, but i have a couple of the symptons of the Swine flu.
I live in London, so i have a risk. The symptons i have are
Sneezing, coughing, runny nose sometimes, tiredness, heavy head feeling, chills
sometimes headache for a about 10 seconds sometimes, and sometime [...]

In late March and early April 2009, cases of human infection with swine
influenza A (H1N1) viruses were first reported in Southern California and near
San Antonio, Texas. CDC and local and state health agencies are working together
to investigate this situation.CDC has determined that this virus is contagious
and is spreading from human to [...]

But that doesn't mean state and local officials aren't hard at work preparing

Many experts predict that if a worldwide influenza were to hit the U.S., it

I think eating some tulasi[holy basil] leaves daily can prevent swineflu.

As of now,  there are limited quantities of H1N1 vaccines available, but are increasing on a daily basis.  Both the Nasal Spray and injections are available.

What is interesting, and a little disconcerting, is that members of the medical community have opposing views as to whether or not you should rush to get vaccinated.

This is to say that there is only one H1N1 vaccine but it has 2 opposite views.

Some doctors are recommending that we get vaccinated against Swine Flu at the first opportunity while other doctors are currently against it.

CONS

Not enough information from the FDA.  To early to start using it. Some doctors are even going as far as to tell their pharmacies not to recommend it yet. The reason behind most of those opposed?

Production of the vaccine was started before the FDA had concluded their testing.  all of this was done to be certain that the vaccine would be available on time to distribute to the public.

There is even a FDA statement associated with the vaccine that states that "Clinical Studies are Ongoing"  according to some doctors this can only  mean that all of the evidence is not yet in.

Skeptics are telling us that this untested vaccine is potentially dangerous and unnecessary.

PROS

Immunize before it causes a major pandemic across the country.  They want to vaccinate as many people as possible as quickly as possible.

This was the only way they had to get the vaccine to the public in time for the flu season.

Some say that there "were no shortcuts" by the FDA inspectors.

Some doctors also tell us that even though the vaccine production was speeded up, the quality of the inspections were just as thorough.

The production of the normal seasonal flu vaccine and the H1N1 Swine Flu vaccine differ very slightly.

It should be given to the public ASAP because children especially are at a higher risk for the H1N1 Swine Flu virus.

Priority for the H1N1 Swine flu vaccine are being given to health care workers, children and young adults ages 6 months to 24 years, adults who care for infants under 6 months, pregnant women and adults with conditions such as asthma or a compromised immune system that predispose them to complications from flu.

The CDC and H1N1 Swine Flu Vaccinations

When questioned about the safety and side effects of the 2009 H1N1 Swine Flu vaccination, this was response of the CDC:

Will the 2009 H1N1 Swine Flu vaccine be safe?

"We expect the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine to have a similar safety profile as seasonal flu vaccines, which have a very good safety track record. Over the years, hundreds of millions of Americans have received seasonal flu vaccines. The most common side effects following flu vaccinations are mild, such as soreness, redness, tenderness or swelling where the shot was given. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will be closely monitoring for any signs that the vaccine is causing unexpected adverse events and we will work with state and local health officials to investigate any unusual events."

Are there any side effects to taking the 2009 H1N1 Swine Flu vaccine?

"CDC expects that any side effects following vaccination with the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine would be rare. If side effects occur, they will likely be similar to those experienced following seasonal influenza vaccine. Mild problems that may be experienced include soreness, redness, or swelling where the shot was given, fainting (mainly adolescents), headache, muscle aches, fever, and nausea. If these problems occur, they usually begin soon after the shot and last 1-2 days. Life-threatening allergic reactions to vaccines are very rare. If they do occur, it is usually within a few minutes to a few hours after the shot is given.

After vaccination you should look for any unusual condition, such as a high fever or behavior changes. Signs of a serious allergic reaction can include difficulty breathing, hoarseness or wheezing, swelling around the eyes or lips, hives, paleness, weakness, a fast heart beat or dizziness. If any unusual condition occurs following vaccination, seek medical attention right away. Tell your doctor what happened, the date and time it happened, and when the vaccination was given. Ask your doctor, nurse, or health department to report the reaction by filing a Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) form."

No matter what facts you are presented with, either for or against, one must also be aware of possible misinformation by well meaning people.  And, this goes for those both for or against the H1N1 Swine Flu vaccine.

It is suggested that you speak to doctors on both sides of this issue but ultimately, it is only you and your family that can make this important decision.

I've been watching this swine flu "pandemic" rather carefully and have questioned the alarm propagated by the media and what is really behind all the fear mongering. I encourage your thoughts on what the data really mean. I always thought that a pandemic meant that cases increased at an accelerating rate. These data would not appear to support a "pandemic". These numbers don't even come close to malaria, tuberculosis, diabetes, cancer, HIV, or even "normal" flu. Why all the hype?
The following data was gathered from the WHO (World Health Organization) website's situation updates

No one can predict the future so no one can say that swine flu will NOT mutate. What % of the world's population could die IF swine flu mutates into a SEVERE pandemic?

Local officials throughout the U.S. are trying to organize resources in order to prepare for a potential epidemic of patients suffering from the highly feared H1N1 strain. Nancy Cordes reports.

the infected patients were isolated and treated to avoid spreading of the swineflu ,but their bio waste and humen waste of infected persons too need to be disposed properly to avoid unexpected future pandemics, how the hospitals managing all those things ?
swine flue is said to be a combination of humenflu + birdflu + swineflu so even if it is cleared in infected persons thru birds and pigs the disease will continue for a very long time!!!

The H1N1 virus continues to spread in Wisconsin.

Everyone wants to know what can be done to increase our body's natural resistance to a variety of infections, including the now-emerging swine flu (H1N1).  Taking herbal supplements is one way to accomplish this.

Volumes have been written on this subject of  immune-boosting herbal products.  Since the question seems to be of vital concern, especially if you’ve been listening to the news lately, I will cover what I consider, only the top ways to boost your immune system with Chinese Herbs.

I must diverge for a moment because if you are serious about  building a strong immune system a few lifestyle issues must  also be implemented. Otherwise, no matter what herbs you take, long term benefits will elude you. This again is a vast  topic, so I will only list the absolute essential practices you need in your daily life to keep your immune system in balance or in homeostasis.

Getting enough sleep is essential.  Drink water and exercise everyday. (At the very least fit some walking into your day.)  Exercise is also a great way to reduce stress, which is next on this list.  Eat a healthy diet, think variety and consume as little sugar as possible.  If you are not incorporating these practices into your everyday life, your weakening your immune system and any variety of infections will find you a welcome host.

That  being said, boosting your immune system with Chinese herbs can and will help you prevent infections, but herbal supplements  are not an overnight quick fix. Chinese herbal formulas should be taken for at least one month for a powerful,  long lasting effect.  Adaptogenic herbs such as ginseng, shiitake mushrooms, ganoderma, (also known as reishi mushrooms), coryceps, astragalus and dand eleuthero are all herbs at the top of the “boost the immune system”  list.   Adaptogenic  herbs do  exactly what their name implies, they assist the body in "adapting" to its environment. Keep in mind Chinese herbs are best  taken within a formula, rather than individually, to enhance synergistic actions between herbs.

Scientific studies have shown  these herbs all support and enhance the body's immune functions. These adaptogenic herbs have compounds such as  polysaccharides which increase the body's natural killer cells, also known as lymphocytes. Extensive  studies also support the claims that these herbs  promote the activity of antibodies, improve the body's resistance to stress and infections, help balances stress, reduces allergies, increase energy and promote healthy liver functions, just to name a few. A side note, if you are taking immuno-suppresant drugs these herbs are not recommended as they have potent immune enhancing effects which can increase the risk of rejection of the
drugs and thus may severely compromise a person's health.

Most  importantly, if you are looking to purchase any medicinal herbs please buy from a reputable source that you can trust. There are many companies who do not start with high quality crude herbs. Quality herbs, testing for contaminants, proper storage and preparation are all vital to ensuring a herbal products potency. I can’t stress enough, the importance of knowing your buying from a reputable source.

I wish you good health and a strong and healthy immune system.

I was wondering what would happen if there was a bird flu pandemic. I have this friend who can make up weird stories sometimes, and she told me that they were going to lock us in our houses and only vaccinate people from 19-35 years old. This kinda got me wondering what will happen if a pandemic happens. I'm kinda freaked out because I've heard so much about how bad it is and would be, and how slow the vaccines are coming out.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, discusses the H1N1 influenza A virus.

Although Gordon Brown assures us Britain is well prepared to deal with an outbreak of Swine Flu, I am always happier to take proactive action myself and there are some simple measures we can all take.  They are not guaranteed to prevent you getting it, but they will certainly help.

The symptoms are of course very similar to any other flu you might experience: fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, chills and fatigue so report to your doctor if you have these.  However, what you also need to do is focus on strengthening your own immune response to prevent infection getting a hold and developing.

1          This time of year I usually have stopped taking Echinacea, but it is my first port of call to build up my defences and if you can get Echinacea tincture that is the most effective in my opinion. Boots produce their own and there is an excellent one made by Bioforce from helath stores.  Take it daily for three weeks then a week off.

2          Next increase the amount of vitamin C you are taking, at least 1 gram a day in two 500mg doses is the most effective.  Have as natural and unprocessed diet as you can, and juicing your fruit and vegetables gets you the maximum vitamins from them.

3          Your body requires oxygen for every cell to function properly because viruses can neither survive nor thrive in it. Therefore, the best defence against microbes, germs, harmful bacteria and viruses, such as the swine influenza virus, is to keep the body oxygenated.  Add in eggs to your diet as they are excellent for  improving your oxygen absorption. See the healthy bites item on eggs below.

4          Are you breathing deeply enough? Shallow breathing will not bring enough oxygen into so your system, and being out in the fresh air every day is a must.  Walking at a moderate pace while breathing in for a count of six, and out for a count of six, is one of the simplest ways to do this.  If you find a count of six difficult, reduce it to four, or if it becomes easy increase to six or eight.

5          Limit foods and substances that stress the body such as sugar, caffeine, alcohol, smoking, too much red meat and processed foods high in saturated and hydrogenated fats.

6         Increase your intake of green tea, and reduce coffee and tea.  Green tea will really help as its antixodants will boost your immune system.  Add some lemon to it and you get extra vitamin C as well.

7          Finally, go back to basic hygiene and wash your hands in hot soapy water frequently and carry hand gel when you are out and use it after contact with others such as a handshake – and contact in public places with stair rails, lift buttons and so on.

It may all seem like a nonsense, but people have died from not taking this seriously.  The good habits outlined here will help protect you, and if you maintain them you will have a solid barrier to prevent future infection.

Learn about H5N1 and how it can affect you and your family.

The most up-to-date information on the swine flu and how you can protect yourself and your family is available on Sen. Cornyn's website, www.cornyn.senate.gov.

The current Swine Flu epidemic has caused a lot of concern over the possible repercussions since there is no viable vaccine that will remedy the illness.  Swine Flu is actually, according to the CDC, a combination (or recombination) of pig, avian (bird) and either sheep or cow viruses. Somehow all of these separate viruses combined themselves together and jumped species to humans. Sound familiar?

When the AIDS virus first began making news about 1981, we were told by the CDC that 3 Africans had sex with a green monkey and these normal homebodies then began traveling world-wide and spread AIDS to the rest of the world. Now we are being asked to believe something equally absurd has happened with three separate viruses to cause this new swine flu epidemic.

As of April 24, 2009 these are the current statistics:
149 dead in Mexico, 1,614 infected
40 infected in the United States
6 infected in Canada
10 infected in New Zealand
20 suspected infected in Spain
14 suspected in Britain
1 Infected in Israel

Looking at these stats it is assumable that this epidemic began in Mexico. And again we hear the mantra that black and brown people are just so environmentally unclean that these diseases naturally come from wherever they inhabit.  If these assumptions were being made of the Jewish people, there would be international outrage by Jews at being singled out for possible harassment and embarrassment. But who will speak up for Mexico? Who spoke up for Africa when the first lie was released.

There appears to be a continual attempt to vilify certain black and brown segments of American society. But the question is why?

If you have been paying attention, the answer is simple.

If this is a manufactured (or recombined) virus...who is responsible?

Who has the finances to use the very expensive recombinant DNA series to manufacture this deadly disease?

Who has the necessary resources to package it and implement its exposure into a select group of people?

And who has the will and the callousness to attempt to genocidally wipe out entire nations without a second thought?

If it is not a manufactured virus, then we really need to find that human who had such intimate contact with a pig last week and a bird earlier this week because he would then be patient zero.

The fact is folks, this is only the beginning of these deadly diseases...in all probability, there may be more. We need to start asking the right questions and hold our leaders responsible for the answers they give us.

We also need to look at the major pharmaceutical companies that stand to cash-in on this epidemic. What have their stocks done in the past month? What were they doing six months ago? What are they doing today?

I truly hope I am 100% wrong, but...in the meantime, just follow the money.

If the Pandemic Flu keeps a family home for eight weeks at a time, what does a family need to prepare; besides emergency food? There are reports that that there may be up to three waves (eight weeks each) before medicine is available. I have stocked up on food; what else?

The CDC is warning parents and educators that the H1N1 flu virus is hitting teens and young adults the hardest. Bianca Solorzano has the latest.

The outbreak of Swine Flu in Mexico has caused many to go into a state of panic. As of today’s date, there are confirmed infected persons in Canada, Scotland, New Zealand, Spain, and Israel. In the U.S., confirmed infections have been noted in ten states.  Therefore, it should not be a surprise to anyone that Travel and Tourism will be at the mercy of this crisis.  Over the last three days, travelers cancelled their flights and land based all inclusive vacations citing concerns over Swine Flu.  While the cruise lines have suspended all stops to Mexico out of caution, their historical records indicate that the Cruise Lines are, and have always been, better prepared to respond to viral outbreaks when compared to land based destinations.

Since the 1970s the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a division of the U.S. Public Health Service, and the cruise industry established a good cooperative relationship through the establishment and implementation of a Vessel Sanitization Program (VSP).  The simple goal of the VSP is to assist the cruise ship industry to prevent and control the introduction, transmission, and spread of gastrointestinal illnesses (GI) on cruise ships.  The VSP is implemented through a program which consists of Inspection, Monitoring, Training, and Providing Education.

During an inspection, the CDC inspects the medical facilities, portable water systems, swimming pools and whirlpool spas, galleys and dining rooms, children activity center, hotel accommodations (rooms and suites), ventilation systems, and common areas of the ship.  The CDC utilizes electronic monitoring of illness on cruise ships, and must be notified of illness onboard prior to the ships arrival at a U.S. port.    Most importantly, all cruise lines must develop and maintain an Outbreak Prevention and Response Plan (OPRP).  In the event of an outbreak, the cruise ship is required to increase daily cleaning and disinfection frequencies; stop high-risk activities, such as self-service buffet tables and handshaking; isolate ill people; collect clinical and/or environmental specimens for analysis; and provide daily updates to VSP that include case counts and reports of what the ship has done to establish control.

As you can see, the cruise line industry has been trained and prepared for more than thirty years to handle and manage infections like the Swine Flu.  In fact, some cruise lines have successful done so over the years.  In addition to all the precautions, all cruise ships, unlike many all inclusive vacations destinations, have medical infirmaries, with the appropriate staff to manage acute situations.  Additionally, to bridge the gap, cruise lines, and their agents, usually recommend the purchase of travel insurance to cover medical expenses, emergence air transportation, and other important items, in the unlikely event that illness interrupts your vacation.

Is your all inclusive vacation destination prepared to respond to the Swine Flu in a manner comparable to the cruise line industry? Cruising is the clearly the best vacation value.  If you disagree, I would love to hear from you.

We are worried we will have problems returning through France because of the UK swine flue

A lot can be said about the swine flu. Truth be told, the virus is affecting people no different than any other in the past. Throw aside the questions of origination in a lab and mandatory vaccination. This flu acts and behaves like any other. Make sure to use caution in public places. Don't sit next to the coughing guy. Wash your hands frequently to prevent cross contamination.

The flu virus takes advantage of a weak immune system. Make sure you are keeping your body in the best shape you can. From exercise to supplements do what you feel comfortable with. Just make sure the end goal is a healthier you. Immune building smoothies are a great way to introduce your body to vitamins and minerals. I also suggest keeping hand sanitizer on everyone that comes in contact with others. Being able to have a quick hand wash will stop germs in there tracks. Remember to wash with the sanitizer at least once an hour if you are touching a lot of things that everyone in the office or work place may come into contact with. It is always best to avoid the situation but sometimes we can’t so just wash it off!

If by chance you see any flu like symptoms get to a Doctor quickly for a check up! He will then be in the best position to diagnose and give treatment. The swine flu is like any other flu, good common sense, personal hygiene and health will keep most problems away. Ultimately the chance of getting the swine flu is extremely minimal. Your risk goes up with the amount of social contact.

Wash your hands

Basic way of preventing getting infected is washing your hands frequently, especially after coughing or sneezing. You can use soap and water, alcohol-based hand sanitizers are also effective. Hand sanitizers can be used when water isn't available.

Don't touch your eyes, nose or mouth

Germs spread when you touch your eyes, nose or mouth after touching something that's contaminated.

Avoid close contact with sick people

If possible, avoid contact with possibly infected people. Avoid crowds. Swine flu spreads mainly when people cough or sneeze.

Avoid travel

Try to limit traveling, especially to high risk areas such as Mexico. If you've been to Mexico and have flu like symptoms visit a doctor.

Wear facemask or respirator

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends wearing facemask in crowded settings to prevent getting infected and to not infect others. Respirator should be used if you have close contact with infected person (for example you're caring of sick person at home).

Antiviral drugs

Swine influenza A (H1N1) is sensitive to Oseltamivir (sold under name Tamiflu) and Zanamivir (sold as Relenza). They are effective means of swine flu prevention and treatment. If taken for treatment, Tamiflu and Relenza are most effective if taken within 2 days after illness started. They are also effective for prevention if given to healthy person that had contact with infected people. Antiviral drugs are 70% to 90% effective means of flu prevention. According to CDC, number of days they should be used to prevent H1N1 influenza varies depending on each person's situation.

Vaccine

Influenza A (H1N1) vaccine isn't available yet, WHO and CDC are working on it.

Stay home if you feel sick

CDC recommends to stay at home for 7 days after symptoms begin or until you are symptom-free for 24 hours to not spread infection further.

Take care of your health

Sleep well, be active, manage stress, drink lots of fluids, eat healthy. This strengthens your immune system.
