There are now 22 cases of swine flu in Australia. People are being isolated and going into quarantine but no one has died so I'm wondering what makes it more dangerous than the regular flu as people are recoving from it?

The thing is, they don't know as it's a new virus that our bodies have never seen before. According to the World Health Organisation, there are a few things they're concerned about:
It's never been seen before
- The H1N1 virus strain causing the current outbreaks is a new virus that has not been seen previously in either humans or animals.
There is no pre-existing immunity
- Although firm conclusions cannot be reached at present, scientists anticipate that pre-existing immunity to the virus will be low or non-existent, or largely confined to older population groups.
It's more contagious than regular flu
- H1N1 appears to be more contagious than seasonal influenza. The secondary attack rate of seasonal influenza ranges from 5% to 15%. Current estimates of the secondary attack rate of H1N1 range from 22% to 33%.
Although it seems to cause mild symptoms in most people, they're not sure why so many people died of it in Mexico
- With the exception of the outbreak in Mexico, which is still not fully understood, the H1N1 virus tends to cause very mild illness in otherwise healthy people. Outside Mexico, nearly all cases of illness, and all deaths, have been detected in people with underlying chronic conditions.
They're worried it could mutate
- Apart from the intrinsic mutability of influenza viruses, other factors could alter the severity of current disease patterns, though in completely unknowable ways, if the virus continues to spread. Scientists are concerned about possible changes that could take place as the virus spreads to the southern hemisphere and encounters currently circulating human viruses as the normal influenza season in that hemisphere begins.
So basically it's a concern because it's unknown which is why there has been such high levels of quarantine and concern over it.

Any virus can cause death. It all depends on which person has it and how healthy they are to begin with. Because swine flu has already caused so many deaths so quickly and that's the type of flu that is going around the world right now this is the reason that it has all the attention right now. Remember SARS and the asian flu's that were upfront not too long ago. Then MRSA was the thing for awhile. The danger's of all of these things have been in the media for a good reason. Media attention get's the word out faster than word of mouth in a high school. It can also provide information to the public that can be helpful when something new comes along. The media is all over the world too. Right now there are virus's that can spread from the most remote part of the world and around it in 24-48 hours. This is because of all of the public transportation that is so much faster than years ago. Then every time they come up with a vaccine the virus can also mutate which is how swine flu came to be from a bird to a pig then to humans. This is as amazing as the human race is. I hope this helps. Good luck and God Bless

It is not more dangerous. People are being diagnosed with swine flu, as opposed to the regular flu virus, because of the odd time of year that the flu outbreak is happening in the part of the globe that it originated (it is summer here). Therefore, regardless of what type of flu it is, if you have flu signs and symptoms, doctors are automatically diagnosing patients with the swine flu. Once the odd flu outbreaks discontinue in summery areas of the globe, the epidemic will be considered over.

I think it has become more dangerous after the cruise ship pacific dawn let all the passengers off after they told the authorities on board they were sick they were then let go to travel freely around Australia thru major airports instead of being quarantined. Now the cruise ship has been ordered to stay at sea as its crew are now becoming sick. Any flu has the potential to kill a person if they have an already low or compromised immune system.

Okay, the question is, Is the Swine Flu more dangerous than a regular flu in Australia? How can you answer that? What makes the people of Australia any different than any other country? There has only been 7 deaths so far and all of those have been in Mexico. I think that people are over reacting to all of this. I have a question for you all. How many people die from any other form of flu each year? I bet it's way more than 7. And another thing that has come to mind, is how can it be more dangerous if it's not an airborne virus? Oh and one more thing to think about, this swine flu seems to be a recent concern world wide, but who can say that it hasn't been around for a while in countries that have been affected? Personally, I think that it's been around longer than what's been heard on the news. The best prevention is to step back from those that sneeze and cough, and too wash hands as the virus is passed through droplets. Please don't misunderstand my opinions, panic solves nothing.

It is not more dangerous, it causes exactly the same symptoms and is equally as dangerous as the normal flu. Australia is just taking precautions to prevent it getting out here. Not cause its dangerous just because the health department doesnt want any more random diseases in Australia.

of course it is.
We understand the risks of regular flu but we DO NOT understand the risks of Swine Flu, that's why it's potentially dangerous!

its POTENTIAL to spread quickly and mutate into something worse..remember the Spanish Flu of 1918? killed one in every four people on Earth, only one small island escaped. But this strain not same lethal potential at this time, and medical science much better equipped today to forestall that same disastrous scenario

The Media have kicked it into overdrive and the governments are doing nothing to stop people traveling with it. People need to be quarantined where they catch it to stop the spread. Some stupid man in Australia, desperate to get home... flies half way across the world with it, knowing he has it and then brings it to a new state which was clean.. AWFUL and SICKENING

the swine flu isnt any dangerous than regular flu in fact regular flu kills 36,000 in US alone each year, so swine flu doent kill a lot. but wut makes it more dangerous in a way is its high chance to mutate into something more dangerous, like the spanish flu which killed millions

so basically no one really knows if swine flu is bad or not, it could be a media beat up or it could be for real, and i doubt if we will ever know, as long as people stand to make money we will get lied to, but then again governments lie to us every day one way or the other.

More dangerous in the sense that if you catch it, you're more likely to be hospitalised or, potentially, die. But far less dangerous in the sense that you're not nearly as likely to catch it.

Swine flu is really an overreaction. Hundreds or even thousands of people die evry year with normal flu. Of course this disease exists but the overreactio from the governments isn't helping at all. It seems to have really dies down already,

I think it is just scary because it is so contagious and can pass from human to human. The fact that it can mutate and become worse is the real scary thing. But any flu can do that.

More people die from regular flu every year. People need to learn to cough into their sleeves rather than their hand which spreads germs exponentially.

no people are overreacting. the regular flue kills more people. swine flu only killed like 2 people.

it's more dangerous that 'regular' flu anywhere. not just in australia.

People in Aussie have it now?? Oh.. well over here (America), it's pretty much under control. I think the "scare" from swine flu kind of died.. So don't worry about it too much, I guess..
