from what i have read the current "swine flu" is a mixture of human ,avian and two types of swine flu. so if it is in fact part swine shouldn't the name still stick? i know the pig farmers where in a uproar because it might hurt their bottom dollar but isn't the current epidemic a little more important than their wallets or is the government pushing a change of the name so as not to worry people ?

Because that's what it is. It got the name swine flu because it primarily infected pigs.
And for every one freaking out about it... It has been around sense the 30's just chill out.

It did come from pigs originally, but now it has nothing to do with pigs--naming it "swine flu" is no different from "h1n1," especially as the second name is just as accurate--and "swine flu" will not help people, it'll just hurt pig farmers and grocery stores that want to sell pork, etc...

Like the others said, it's because it isn't directly contracted from pigs. It's been a misconception. Actually, in Egypt they slaughtered 3,000 pigs to prevent it. That's one major reason why.

The latter name sounds a little less disgusting and more "scientific" than "Swine Flu". Plus it makes it look like the CDC has a handle on the situation.

Because it is a better name/description of the virus. Calling it 'Swine Flu' is meaningless and misleading.

Because it's not really just for swine anymore, there's no point in calling in "swine flu"

It is hurting the pork industry unnecessarily.

Because Hogs don't like being called swine, or getting blamed for people catching the flu
