To start with the USA has never and never will learn from the past, it's too paranoid. As far as the flu of 1918 they did what all countries did, dropped dead in their thousands.

1918 was a much different pandemic. This comes via PBS. In 1918 there were actually three different flus at the same time. The first to hit was not very strong, but very contagious. The second was not very contagious by itself and really strong, but its mutation was so different from the first that, it became much more contagious to those with an already weak immune system from catching the first flu. then there was a third that was somewhat contagious, and somewhat powerful. the third flu once again was a much seperate mutation making the immune system so assaulted it couldn't cope with that much attack on the body.
