while it is true the media tends to "hype up" things and over-exaggerrate, I think this time it IS a concern. I think "The Wife" said it perfectly.

Because it makes people watch the news and panic and fear is what sells and drives the news. Your going to get a lot more people watching your news channel if you have "DEADLY BIRD FLU, PANDEMIC IMMINENT" appear then you will if you have "FIREMAN SAVES DOG FROM TREE"

Ratings, and furthermore, money.
It's so "serious," yet there's a ~1% mortality rate in Mexico, and a 0.0% mortality rate in the U.S, and it's been going on for two weeks.
The only reason anyone died in Mexico is because generally, they don't wash everyday, they are dirty, don't have the best health care in the world obviously, etc. I used to live in Mexico.

What is sad about it is that people are so desensitized by the media that no one thinks the Swine Flu is an issue. Everyone believes it's just the media looking for a story. You have no idea how many people don't think it's an issue. I live in NYC... more cases are being confirmed everyday. Yet the people who live here blow it off as just a flu bug...

Swine flu is in the news because, drug companies are the biggest advertiser on every news channel, check out who spends the most in commercials, drug companies.
If they declare a pandemic they will try to force vaccinations to all people, claiming that un-vaccinated people will put people at risk because they are not vaccinated.
"I have the reports of several Mexican doctors who tell us that their colleagues were vaccinated and died. Vaccinated with what, you may ask? Now that is a really good question... "
