PostHeaderIcon Is The Swine Flu (or The H1n1 Virus) Really All That Serious?

They've made it out to almost be a pandemic, or steps away from it. It just became big all of a sudden and is centrally located in Mexico, it hasn't been in the United States for that long either, just recently.
Also, what would you advice to me if I contracted the virus?
Would my chances of survival be good if I went to the hospital and got proper treatment quickly?

There are four different antiviral drugs thar are liscensed for the US for the treatment of infuenza: amantadine, rimantadine, oseltamivir, and zanamivir. I think you'll have a chance to survive with these medications. :-)

I don't think it's a big deal at all...
The media is just trying to pump fear into us because it keeps ours eyes glued to the television set.
Truly, swine flu can be treated and prevented like a common flu. You just need to know how to take care of yourself.
I wouldn't be, and I am not, worried at all.

Antiviral meds should work if you get it.
it's a level 5 right now, so it's not officially a pandemic yet.
the media is trying to sell newpapers, so they will blow it out of proportions a bit.
so far only 1 toddler who came from mexico to texas to get treatment has died in the US. the ones who are infected are in mild condition and are recovering.
the flu virus mutates, so we're still waiting to see what it turns into....something deadly or not.

I think the swine flu should be taken seriously, after all, there isn't a vaccine, humans aren't immune to it, and it is highly contagious. If you got the virus, I would suggest you go to the hospital to get medical attention. At this point in time, your chances of survival are pretty high if you got proper treatment quickly.

This is what I got about the Swine Flu from My Company about the Treatments for it.
There are four Different antiviral drugs that are licensed for use in the US for the Treatment of influenza : Amantadine, Rimantadine, Oseltamivir and Zanamivir.
While Most Swine Influenza Viruses have been susceptible to all four Drugs, the most recent seven swine influenza viruses isolated from humans are resistant to Amantadine. I think a lot of this is just scare mongering, and they're making it seem huge so we can all avoid a full-scale pandemic.
I think it's dramatic too, but I think in the end, it could be the actions that are currently being taken which save alot of lives.
Generally, patients with Swine Flu outside of Mexico are experiencing "mild" symptoms. They're reacting well to treatment and many are making full recoveries, and many (even in Mexico) have already made full recoveries.
As long as you keep your own personal hygiene good, wash your hands on a regular basis (especially after being out in public) then you should be fine.
And yes, your chances of survival will be significantly higher if you got treatment quickly, rather than later. There has only been one fatality outside of Mexico (the 23 month old baby from Texas) and everyone else who is being treated with the disease (in the UK at least) are on the way to recovery. I understand that one woman (the Londoner confirmed with the flu) is even recieving treatment at home, and not in a hospital.
