It's simple, soldiers, while fighting contracted the "super-flu" and brought it home with them. The cities back then were dirty, cramped, and over-populated, which only added to the problem by spreading it faster.

The answer is actually alarmingly simple...
Soldiers abroad contacted the Flu by natural contagious properties of the flu. When they came home, they bought the flu with them. As a result of the sheer contagious properties of the flu, and the amount of soldiers who came home infected, the flu grew into a pandemic.

When soldiers came back from the war they brought a super flu with them. WWI was essentially responsible for spreading it.
